World Hepatitis Day 2016 observed
The Society observed the day by organizing an awareness building discussion meeting with general public, medical students, nurses and members of the print and electronic media. The meeting was held in the auditorium of Anwer Khan Modern Medical College, Dhaka. National Professor M R Khan was due as the chief guest, but could not attend because of illness. Prof. Md. Nazrul Islam, Ex-Vice Chancellor of BSMMU was the special guest. Prof. Mobin Khan presided over the meeting. Senior teachers and officials of Anwer Khan Medical College were also present.
The programme started with recitation from the holy Quran. Special prayer was offered for the departed soul of Prof. AKM Khorshed Alam, Ex-Chairman and Professor of Hepatology, BSMMU and founder Vice President of the Society, whose first death anniversary was on 26 July 2016.
Dr. Md. Golam Azam, Assistant Professor of GHPD, BIRDEM elaborated the evolution of World Hepatitis Day. Dr. M. Motahar Hossain, General Secretary of the Society and Consultant Hepatologist at Square Hospitals, Dhaka discussed about the history and epidemiology of viral hepatitis. Dr. Md. Golam Mostafa, Associate Professor of Hepatology, BSMMU and Treasurer of the Society, Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, Associate Professor of Hepatology, BSMMU and Secretary Scientific Affairs of the Society, and Prof. Md. Abu Sayeed, Professor of Medicine, Chittagong Medical College, discussed the modes of transmission, health implications and means of prevention of hepatitis A, E, B and C respectively. Dr. Moral Nazrul Islam highlighted the importance of a concerted effort to prevent and ultimately eliminate viral hepatitis.
Special guest eminent virologist Prof. Nazrul Islam highlighted the grave situation prevailing amongst pregnant women who face a grim prognosis when infected with hepatitis E in the third trimester of pregnancy. He urged the government to try to provide vaccine against hepatitis E for pregnant mothers.
Chief guest National Professor M R Khan's message was read out to the audience by Dr. Shahinul Alam.
Prof. Mobin Khan, in his concluding remarks, emphasized on the importance of public awareness in combating the national health problem associated with different forms of hepatitis.
